Wallingford, CT, January 8, 2009.........Dr. David W. Parke, medical director of low vision rehabilitation at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford, was a Guest of Honor at the 2008 Joint Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the European Ophthalmological Society held in Atlanta, Georgia. The yearly event, attended by 27,000, is the largest, most extensive scientific meeting in ophthalmology, with attendees from throughout the world.

Dr. Parke was recognized for his dedication to education and advocacy, which has benefited not only his patients, but the field of ophthalmology as well.  He was one of three individuals honored for their significant contributions to ophthalmology and the Academy.

In addition to his many years with Masonicare's Low Vision Program, Dr. Parke served as chief of ophthalmology at Meriden-Wallingford Hospital (now MidState Medical Center) for 27 years and maintained an active comprehensive ophthalmology practice in Meriden until 1988.  He was Director of Federal Affairs for the Academy and served on the executive committee of its council.  At the state level, Dr. Parke served several terms as president of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians, was president of the New Haven County Medical Society, and served 10 years as chairman of the Committee on Legislation for the Connecticut State Medical Society.

Dr. Parke is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Yale School of Medicine. He has also been active with the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation and Lions Low Vision Centers of Connecticut.

According to William C. Piper, President of Masonicare Health Center, Dr. Parke was instrumental in establishing the comprehensive, state-of-the-art Low Vision Program at the Center, which has been providing support and encouragement to low vision patients since 1993.   "Dr. Parke's life's work has been helping people with low vision and sharing his extensive knowledge and expertise with his colleagues and the community.  His long affiliation with Masonicare and his guidance in creating our outstanding Low Vision program has made it one of the best in the state."
