Ashlar Village Residents Scholarship Fund Helps 17 Young People Further Their Educations - 7/10/2008

Wallingford, CT, July 10, 2008.....More than 200 people attended the fourth Ashlar Village Residents' Scholarship Fund presentation held in June in the auditorium of the new Hartog Activity Center at Ashlar Village, Masonicare's Continuing Care Retirement Community on Cheshire Road in Wallingford.

Seventeen young men and women, who are either employees of Ashlar Village or the children of employees, were honored during the presentation.  David Gessert, Chairman of the Ashlar Village Board of Directors, and Jon-Paul Venoit, Ashlar Village President, were on hand to announce the names and present a scholarship check to each recipient.

Those who received scholarships this year are Macey Apuzzo, Chelsea Boyd, Michael Cavaliere, Lindsey Dow, Matthew Dyer, Erica Ferraiuolo, Sonia Gogliettino, Brianna Granatelli, Lauren Grant, Jessica Halten, Justin Knickerbocker, Amanda Lavoie, Stephanie Ney, Kari Sager, Victoria Soley, Andrew Wolfer and Sarah Zeoli.   Special guest speaker Rajaa Aouji, an award recipient each year for the past three years and a recent graduate, spoke about what receiving this award has meant to her.  Ashlar Village employee Jocelyn Miller provided vocal entertainment, accompanied by resident pianist William Tedeschi.

Ashlar Village residents established the Scholarship Fund in 2004 to provide educational scholarships for young people who either work at Ashlar Village or are children of employees.   The Scholarship Funds are raised in a variety of ways, but mainly through the sale of unique, handmade craft and clothing items in The Ashlar Village Specialty Shop, manned and stocked solely by resident volunteers.

Donald Warner, a popular and highly regarded resident of Ashlar Village who passed away in April of 2007, was a strong advocate for the Specialty Shop and the scholarship fund.  His family presented a $1,000 memorial scholarship in his memory at last year's ceremony and did so again this year.  In memory of her late father, Donna Lange, Mr. Warner's daughter, presented $1,000 to Amanda Lavoie.  Blanche Newman, AV resident and manager of the Specialty Shop, said Mr. Warner was a wonderful and very caring gentleman.  "I know Don would be very happy to know that our young people will continue to benefit because of all of his efforts on their behalf."
